Bad design isn’t just about an ugly sofa or hideous wallpaper. Bad design can be downright dangerous. From the ease of navigating a space to toxic materials leeching VOCs into the air, if thought and care isn’t put into a design, people suffer.
This is something that affects me personally. Since I was 19, I’ve battled serious health issues. Recently I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Disease. During a visit with my doctor, I found out that everything I come in contact with on a daily basis can directly affect my health. The food I eat, the beauty products I use, and the space I live in all play a role in helping, or hurting, my immune system. I’ve focused mainly on food, exercise, and sleep, but I was ignoring a major factor: my environment. Is my house making me sick? And if my house is making me sick, what about all of the others out there going through the same thing as me? This was the turning point for me and for KM Home Interiors.
I’ve always been passionate about sustainable design, but it wasn’t something I forced onto my clients, ultimately letting them choose which materials and products went into their home. But this feels irresponsible and disingenuous to me. I care so deeply about the health of the planet and of my clients, I felt I was doing a disservice to them by not teaching them about toxic materials and not encouraging them to go green. So I decided to change things up for myself, for my clients, and for the planet.
Now, when you come to KM Home Interiors for your next project, you will be getting a designer who will create a space that is beautiful, functional, and most importantly: healthy. I will work to find materials and products that are locally sourced to where you live, are safe for the environment and your body, and have a low, environmental impact.
My motto has always been “Good Design Isn’t Just Seen, It’s Felt” but now it has a deeper meaning for me. Good design is about a space that is healthy for you – mentally, spiritually, and physically.
