What a year it was! 2017 was a crazy roller coaster of a ride and I’m sure most of you are happy to bid it adieu. As much as I’m excited to finally be in 2018, I still like to look back at the previous year and see how far I’ve come. Here’s my little recap of 2017 and what I’m hoping to achieve in 2018:
2017 was my year of goals. At the start of last year, I laid out my resolutions for KM Home Interiors and I’m so excited to say I crushed them (well… mostly).
My first goal was developing this blog. I had made the promise to myself (and you, my wonderful readers) that I would do a weekly post covering all things design and organizing. Not only did I make this happen, but I found a new passion for writing that has translated into a side gig: I’m officially an author for TheManual.com where I share design tips and cover trendy architecture for their 4 million monthly readers. 4 Million! That number still gives me chills. And I wouldn’t have found this path if I hadn’t dedicated myself to this blog.
Next up was my much-neglected Etsy shop. I love crafting and over the year I’ve been to vendor events, created a Craft Class 101 series here on the blog, and saw a huge bump in requests for custom made items. While I’m happy with the redesign of my Etsy shop, it’s still not where I want it to be. It’s a work in progress and I’m constantly developing ideas for new home decor items.
Finally I made a promise to be more social. Both my Facebook and Instagram pages were gathering cobwebs so I dusted them off and got active. Now I use Facebook to post updates such as new services and share links to interesting design articles. On Instagram I post tons of behind the scene photos of current design projects and crafts that I’m working on. There’s also a few cameos of Lizzie the Office Kitty (who is the best, and worst, assistant ever!).
The Road Ahead
2018 will be my third year of setting business resolutions rather than personal ones. While I do have personal goals (like exercising more, watching less tv, etc), focusing on business goals naturally leads to me achieving my personal ones too. Traveling for work allows me to explore new places and get in extra exercise (like hiking through the Egyptian desert or sea kayaking in the Pacific). Writing has become a hobby that I get paid to do rather than a chore. I watch way less television because I’m too busy to binge on Netflix shows.
So what do I want to achieve in 2018? I have three big goals:
1. The continuation of developing my Etsy shop. I’ve been working for months on a new line of home decor products that reflect my love for simple staple pieces while also tying in my Portuguese ancestry (which includes cork farmers, fishermen, and carpenters). My new line will include lots of natural materials and still be based on my core design philosophy of using recycled, reclaimed materials to create beautiful yet affordable pieces. I truly believe good design should be accessible to everyone, no matter the budget, so I’m working hard to keep the costs of my items low. Look for the new line to debut this Fall!
2. Write more… a lot more. The writing bug has bit me and I want to keep going with it. Along with this blog and my assignments for The Manual, I’m working on a few other projects that will allow me to continue writing while also keeping my design clients first. This is especially important this year because come this spring, I’ll be exploring the East Coast for a two month long road trip. Writing is easy to do from the road so I’ll still be able to keep up with the blog while also gaining new inspiration for articles, designs, and home decor products!
3. Poor Pinterest. While Facebook and Instagram got all of my attention in 2017, Pinterest was neglected. I love this site and it’s a great resource for my clients. This year I plan on doing a total overhaul of my Pinterest page with new boards and informative pins, giving you plenty of design inspiration and allowing me to better collaborate with clients.
So there it is folks, my resolutions for 2018.
It is so fitting for KM Home Interiors. The last two years have been a lot of ups and downs as I learn the ins and outs of running a business as well as learning where my passions lie and what direction I want to take the company. 2018 is my year to shine! I hope the same for you too.
